Draining a Single-Boiler Espresso Machine (Non-Heat Exchanger)

Please take a few minutes to read and thoroughly understand these instructions before attempting to drain your boiler. Always refer to the manufacturer’s operation manual.

Make sure your machine is completely cold. For safety reasons, we recommend unplugging your machine for several hours to allow it to cool. Once you machine is cold, double-check to make sure the cord is unplugged.

  1. Remove the drip tray, drip grate, portafilter, reservoir lid and tank and any other loose parts from the machine
  2. Make sure all buttons are in the OFF position and lay the machine on its back. Plug the machine in.
  3. Hold the a tall-sided container under the steam wand at a slight angle to catch all the water from the steam wand. Turn the power switch on.
  4. Activate the pump.
    • This step may be different depending on your machine make and model
    • If you have a hot water dispensing button, turn it on.
    • Turn on the steam switch.
  5. Water should be coming out the steam wand now. Keep the steam valve open until the stream of water has stopped.
  6. Flip the machine on its top. Be sure to keep your container under the steam wand, as water will comtinue to flow through the wand.
  7. Once the water has stopped coming out of the steam wand, place the machine on its back and turn off both the water and main power switches. Your boiler is now drained!



Draining a Single-Boiler Heat Exchange Machine

Please take a few minutes to read and thoroughly understand these instructions before attempting to drain your boiler. Always refer to the manufacturer’s operation manual.

  1. Plug the machine in and allow it to come up to brewing temperature.
  2. Caution: The water is HOT and can scald you, so take care. Once your machine is up to temperature, place one tall container under the brew group and one under the hot water dispenser. Make sure they are secure and wont tip or fall once the water begins draining.
  3. Remove the reservoir lid and the water intake line(s) from the reservoir.
  4. Turn on the brew switch to engage the pump, taking care to not burn yourself. Continue to run the brew function until water stops flowing from the brew head.
  5. Turn off the brew switch, then turn off the main power switch.
  6. Open up the hot water valve. (Don't forget the water is still scalding hot!) Keep the water valve open until water stops draining out of it. Close the valve. Your boiler is now drained!
  7. Drain the Breville Double Boiler espresso machine:

  8. Remove and empty the water tank then place the empty tank back in.
  9. Open the hot water valve and the steam valve at the same time and let them run. They should only run about ten minutes and then all the water that can get out of those portals should be out.
  10. Leave them open for another hour or so and you should be good to go.
