    Lovejoy Espresso Blend

    Ethiopia Yirgacheffe | $14.00

It should not be surprising that one of our favorite coffees hails from the birthplace of coffee - Ethiopia. Incredible floral aromas of hibiscus and flavors of ripe plum, jasmine, honeysuckle, fig, and Meyer lemon make this a rare treat. We brew our Yirgacheffe in a French press to maximize the intoxicating bouquet and drink it black. It simply doesn't need any doctoring.

    Brazil Minas Gerais | $14.00

This Brazilian Mogiana is warm, nutty, and sweet. The complex aroma of toasted nuts and jasmine blends well with the lingering honey finish. It's a crowd-pleaser too. After a dinner party we brew it for 3.5 minutes in a French press to satisfy a variety of palates. It's always flavorful and never bitter or burnt.

    Lovejoy Espresso Blend | $14.00

We're excited to present our new Lovejoy Espresso Blend. We set out to create a blend with complexity, rich crema and sweetness to spare. Lovejoy Espresso has dark chocolate notes, balanced with innate sweetness and a bit of orange citrus. With its impressive body and superb balance, the Lovejoy Espresso is delicious as a straight shot and shines powerfully through milk in a latte or cappuccino. Although Lovejoy was designed with espresso in mind, we also love it in a French Press or Technivorm.

In our opinion this is the best espresso machine available for under $1,000. Silvia is a solid, commercial grade machine offering reliability, clean design, and no cheap plastic parts. With a little bit of practice you'll be pulling beautiful, thick espresso shots with ease.

    COMMERCIAL QUALITY

This remarkable machine delivers impressive quality normally seen on much more expensive models. It features a forged marine-grade brass boiler, with chrome-plated brass group head and portafilter. The polished stainless steel housing envelops a sturdy iron frame.

    PERFECT MACCHIATOS AND CAPPUCCINOS

Silvia lets out a rambunctious yet smooth hiss of steam that is easily controlled with a perfectly positioned knob. It’s easy to steam up billowing, velvety micro-foam for macchiato or cappuccino. The commercial style steam wand is solid and easy to clean with a wet towel.

    SIMPLE, TIMELESS DESIGN

The Silvia is a genuine work-horse, with a simple, easy to clean Italian design. To minimize mess, a 3-way solenoid valve relieves residual water pressure from the brew head and moves it to the drip tray. This means the excess moisture is pulled from the portafilter, leaving a solid espresso puck.

    PROS:
    CONS:
Impressive steaming power: Once the Silvia is up to steaming temperature, it produces surprisingly powerful, dry steam.
Shallow drip tray: If you don't empty the drip tray after each use, you’ll have a mess on your countertops.
Solid brass boiler: Many espresso machines in Silvia’s price range have aluminum boilers, which don't retain heat as well as brass.
Industrial aesthetics: Silvia is built to last, but its boxy housing isn’t for everyone.
Commercial-grade components: From the commercial portafilter to the internal workings, everything on the Silvia is built to last.
Single boiler: With a single boiler, you can’t steam and brew in unison, but with a little technique (see FAQ tab for details), you'll get great results.

    Details

In our opinion this is the best single-boiler espresso machine available for the home espresso enthusiast for under $1,000. This remarkable machine delivers impressive quality normally seen on much more expensive models.

The Silvia lets out a rambunctious yet smooth hiss that is easily controlled with a perfectly positioned knob. It’s so easy (almost cathartic) to steam up billowing, velvety micro-foam for a free pour macchiato or cappuccino.

    Warranty

Limited 1 year warranty. Repair or replacement of machine within 12 months of the original purchase.

For more details on our warranty policies, click here.

    IMPORTANT:

You must refill the boiler after steaming milk by switching the machine out of steam mode and engaging the brew switch until hot water comes out of the grouphead. This refills your boiler with water AND self-corects the brewing temperature to near 200 degrees. Failure to refill the boiler may burn out your heating element. Repair for this is NOT covered by the warranty.

    General Questions

    Is it really worth $699?

We recognize that there are hundreds of machines out there that cost less than the Silvia, and we’ve tested many of them. In a nutshell, we’ve found the Silvia to be the only machine in its price range or below that we can stand behind. It's the first machine under $700 that features high-quality components, professional build quality, dependability, sturdy feel in your hand, and true espresso coffee. Nothing on the machine feels cheap or plasticky. We ship these out with confidence that our customers will be satisfied with their experience.

You can spend less on an espresso machine but you will sacrifice power and performance, not to mention espresso quality and, overall, the level of pleasure you get from using the machine. Too many people find that their espresso machine sits unused on their countertop because it simply doesn’t make espresso drinks that taste that good. With a good grinder and a bit of practice, you too can make café quality espresso drinks with the Rancilio Silvia.

How long does it take for the machine to heat up?

The boiler will heat from a cold start in five to ten minutes. Even though the boiler power indicator light will turn off in this time, it’s best to wait for all the lines and the brass elements of the group head and portafilter to heat adequately before pulling a shot. This will take between 20 to 25 minutes. You can cheat the machine a little by running water from a hot boiler through the lines and out the group head to quicken the heating of the brewing elements.

    What does 'single boiler' mean?

‘Single boiler’ means exactly that: there is one boiler in the machine. Some espresso machines that cost much more than the Silvia have two boilers, one dedicated exclusively to the steaming mechanism and another dedicated to the brewing mechanism. A single boiler machine provides hot water to brew and super-hot steam for milk foaming from a single heat source. With a single boiler machine, you have the ability to change modes at the flip of a switch to heat the machine up for steaming and cool down to the default mode for brewing espresso.

Is a brass boiler better then an aluminum one?

The Silvia features a heavy-duty brass boiler, which is more durable than aluminum. Aluminum expands and contracts with sharp fluctuations in temperature, which can cause leakage. Also, aluminum is prone to significant corrosion, depending on the ph level of your water. Many people are concerned about drinking hot water that has touched materials like plastic and aluminum. Brass is superior in terms of heat retention and much less likely to corrode.

    What about a PID Controller?

A PID (Proportional Integral Derivative) Control is a popular upgrade to Silvia machines. Basically, a PID controller closely monitors and electronically regulates the water temperature at the brew group. PIDs help you to dial in a precise brewing temperature. However, we find that a bit of attention and the right technique can reliably produce very fine espresso from the Silvia without the need for a $200-$300 upgrade and without voiding your warranty.

Adding $300 to the $699 price of a Silvia gets you within striking distance of an E-61 grouphead machine, which would mean much better temperature stability and you would retain the manufacturer’s warranty. We recommend checking out the Quickmill alexia which provides a number of dramatic upgrades in temperature stability, capacity, aesthetics, power and performance for just a little more money than a PID-adapted Silvia.

Do i need to "temperature surf"?

If you’ve done any online research about the Rancilio Silvia, chances are you’ve come across talk of something called “temperature surfing.” Temperature surfing refers to a method of regulating the temperature of the brew water. It requires determining the precise water temperature relative to the machine’s position in the boiler heating cycle and timing the preparation of your shots accordingly. Some people recommend timing the shot while the boiler is heating (how many seconds since the boiler power indicator light switches on.) Other methods recommend timing the shot as the boiler is cooling (how many seconds after the light switches off.) There are a number of different methods described on various websites; some are quite simple while others require specialized measurement devices and repeated scientific experimentation. How deeply involved you care to get is entirely up to you.

Over the years we’ve tested many ways to regulate temperature on the Silvia, and we have a simpler method. It may not be as precise as some of the 19 step processes you’ll find online, but for most people it will suffice to pull a sweet, rich shot.

In short, we recommend that you steam the milk first, then bleed off the excess pressure and steam out of the grouphead. If you leave the brew switch on for about 15-25 seconds, or until the steam dissipates and only water is coming out of the grouphead, there will be enough of a temperature drop in the boiler that the thermostat will force the boiler to start heating up again. Once the boiler has turned off, if you wait about 30 seconds, you’ll be pretty close to 200 degrees Fahrenheit and ready to pull a good shot. This process should take 2-3 minutes, which is just about the time you’ll need to grind and tamp in preparation for pulling a shot. Be sure to swirl and gently knock your pitcher of steamed milk to maintain consistent texture and “keep it alive.”

There is water running around the outside of the portafilter while it’s brewing, what should I do?

Ensure that the portafilter has no grounds around the top edge before you place it in the group head. Engage the portafilter firmly into the grouphead in order to create a tight seal against the gasket.

Use a Coffeetool 3-in-1 Group head Brush to remove any grounds or coffee residue from the gasket.

If the gasket is cracked or excessively worn, it's time to replace it. You'll find instructions here.
