Technivorm Moccamaster KBTS Coffee Maker
There are hundreds of options out there for a coffeemaker. From high end machines that cost $500 to cheap throwaway models that can be had for $25, there's a machine to suit everybody.
But there's only one machine that suits us, and that's the Technivorm Moccamaster.
The reason is simple. Most machines out there have too many plastic parts, unnecessary electronic gadgetry, and they simply make bad coffee.
This solid, simple, and mechanically perfect coffee maker has been designed and manufactured in the Netherlands since 1964. With good reason it is only one of two coffeemakers that are certified by the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA).
The Moccamaster earned this certification through its superior ability to brew at a consistent temperature between 195 and 205 degrees F for the full brew cycle of 6 minutes. It also will maintain the optimum serving temperature between 155 and 175 degrees F.
The simple, retro look of the Technivorm makes a nice addition to any kitchen. The KBTS model offers the same features as the KBT-741, except with a smaller thermal carafe that holds 8 cups instead of 10.
The Moccamaster KBTS does not come equipped with flashing lights, programmable software, or a built-in grinder. It boasts a simple on/off switch that starts the brewing cycle and a three-position switch on the filter basket that controls the flow of coffee into the carafe.
To make the perfect cup of coffee, fill the clear water tank on top of the stainless-steel tower with water, grind your fresh coffee beans right before brewing and pour into a filter in the filter basket. Place the carafe under the basket, and hit the power switch. The water is heated, pumped over to the filter basket and dispersed via a 9-outlet spray head over your ground coffee. This feature ensures even extraction of the coffee grounds.
Precisely six minutes later, you'll be pouring delicious, piping hot coffee out of the carafe. If you’re impatient, you can close the switch on the filter basket and pull the carafe out before the brew cycle has completed; the flow of coffee will stop while the carafe is removed.
The carafe is solid stainless steel, with double-wall construction and an airtight lid to retain heat. It will comfortably hold 8 cups of coffee (5 ounce cups). The base of the machine is a beautiful polished aluminum finish.

What's the difference between the KBT-741 and the CDT?
The difference is purely aesthetics, four tenths of an inch in height, and a small carafe lid issue. The KBT-741 has a square water tank and housing and is four tenths of an inch taller than the CDT. The CDT has a cylindrical water tank and housing. Both share the same quality components like the copper heating element, have the same carafe, and hold the same amount of water.
There is one very small functional difference between the machines. There is a larger space between the brew basket and the carafe on the CDT, which enables you to put the carafe back in the machine with the lid in place. The KBT-741 has a smaller space, and the carafe can only be put in the coffee maker without the lid in place. We do carry silicone feet that can be affixed to the bottom of the KBT-741 to lift the machine a quarter of an inch, enabling the carafe to be put back with the lid in place. Otherwise, the CDT is a great choice for those that want to put the carafe back with the lid in place. The larger space in the CDT does not affect brewing performance at all
When we first opened up this little company, we had no plans to carry coffee makers. Too many of them gurgle forth disgusting coffee, are made in China, and proudly feature only one reliable function, which is their time of death, precisely two years after purchase. We've been french press and espresso people for so long that we couldn't imagine a coffee maker making a delicious brew. When we heard of the Technivorm, we knew we had to give it a try. It simply did not disappoint, and now we use it every day at the office. In fact, it brews up four to five carafes a day for us, and doesn't show any signs of wear. It weighs about ten pounds, and the European craftsmanship is evident in the quality components. The Technivorm is an investment in years of coffee drinking pleasure.
↑ returnIf you like rich, flavorful coffee and don't mind a bit of sediment, like in french pressed coffee, we highly recommend the gold filter. Ours is imported from Switzerland and features a very fine mesh coated in actual gold. Paper filters wick up more of the natural coffee oils and don't allow as much coffee to get through along with the water, so it will result in a highly filtered cup of coffee. Some people prefer this. If you like "rich" coffee, give the gold filter a try. Any size 4, cone shaped gold filter (or paper filter) will fit in the Technivorm.
↑ returnDoes it keep the coffee hot for 6 hours?
We've found that the Technivorm keeps coffee hot in its carafe for about an hour and a half. If you'd like to keep your coffee hot for longer than that, we recommend some of the vacuum carafes available. We sell some striking jugs from Stelton. We also offer the famous Nissan vacuum jugs. The 51 ounce unit by Nissan does not fit under the Technivorm KBT-741, so you must pour from the Technivorm carafe into the Nissan carafe, but it WILL keep the coffee hot for 5-6 hours. The Nissan 51 ounce carafe will fit (rather snugly, and without the plastic plate) under the basket in the Technivorm CDT
↑ returnI've heard about some issues with the carafe not keeping the coffee hot. Is this true?
There are reports floating around that the Technivorm carafe is inferior to other vacuum carafes. You'll see this mentioned in a few reviews on our site. While the carafe may not keep the coffee hot as long as some thermoses (we've found that it will keep the coffee hot for about an hour and a half under normal circumstances), many of the complaints relate to a defective batch of Technivorm carafes. There was an entire batch of machines that had a broken vacuum seal, which is indicated by the outside surface of the carafe being hot to the touch. Technivorm has gone above and beyond in replacing all of these broken carafes for our customers, and the machines we are shipping now do not have defective carafes. We offer the Nissan Thermos as an add-on to your order if you'd like to have your coffee hot for 6 hours or so. If an hour and a half is sufficient, then the Technivorm carafe that comes with the machine should do the trick.
↑ returnYes. We'll be adding that option to the product page soon. For now, just email us after you place an order with your preference and we'll add it to the order. Send it to sales@clivecoffee.com
↑ returnIs it safe to leave the machine on?
Yes. There are some misconceptions floating around on forum threads and in reviews on various sites. The Technivorm has a DOUBLE safety feature. Two conditions must be met for the heating element to be turned on - the first is the carafe must be pushed in all the way so that the white button is depressed all the way. The second is a floater that is built into the water tank. This is a small piece of plastic that rests under the metal cover on the bottom of the water tank. If this floater isn't floating, it indicates to the machine that there is no water in the tank and the boiler remains off. If either of these two conditions are not met, the power in the machine is only going to the light on the power switch. It's safe to leave the machine on, as the heating element will be completely turned off. We do recommend turning it off when you remember, but it won't harm the machine to leave it on.
↑ returnHow do I clean the carafe if it's not dishwasher safe?
The stainless steel Technivorm carafe can get coffee stains on the inside which are difficult to clean. We have found that using a little electric dishwasher soap (like Cascade), or one of the Cascade “action pacs”, cleans up the inside nicely. Simply fill the carafe full of hot water, add the soap, and let it soak for 30 minutes. All the stains should be removed without any effort.
