Compak has been making espresso grinders since 1952, and their new E5 is a potent and compact commercial beauty. It utilizes the same technology and features you'll see in the rest of the EOD (Essential On Demand) line alongside Slayer espresso machines in cafes around the world. When we first saw the grinder at SCAA 2016, we were immediately impressed by the grind speed and quiet performance of that massive 650 watt motor. Just how fast is the E5? A 14g double shot takes 4.8 seconds. Faster dispensing of coffee means less time for the beans to get heated by friction in the burrs and from the motor. Fitting this all into a 16.5" tall footprint is a triumph of packaging and engineering by Compak. The grind adjustment utilizes their stepless Parallel grind regulation system, just like you'll find on the E10 conical. To adjust the grind, loosen the lock nut, slide the top collar as much or as little as you want (it's very smooth and precise, allowing extremely small adjustments), and then tighten the lock nut.
The elegant electronic user interface allows programming of the grind time as well as tracking of a variety of data, such as when it's time to replace the burrs. In a home, this should be many years down the road. The grinder also includes a built-in cooling fan, and a gorgeous adjustable portafilter holder with dosing funnel to direct the coffee. You can activate the grinder with the portafilter button, or manually on the touch screen.
