COSTA RICA

A peaceful land, endowed with great natural beauty and diversity of wildlife, Costa Rica is notable among the turbulent Latin American countries for having abolished its army shortly after World War II. Today, the country continues to attract and amaze tourist from around the world with it magnificent national parks and its dedication to preservation of the environment.

In the country’s history, coffee was a critical force behind development and the national economy, even earning the title of “the golden bean.” Expansion of its cultivation and opening of export markets created an economic, social, and cultural surge, and an improvement in the country’s infrastructure.

Thanks in large part to coffee, the Federal Debt was paid; the postal service, first Government printing office, San José Hospital and San Juan de Dios Hospital were founded; the Santo Tomás University was founded, and the National Theater was erected.

At present, Costa Rica produces 1.7% of all the coffee in the world, and between 8% and 10% of premium coffee blends. Its economic importance has decreased, however, dropping from 30-40% of GDP in the 70’s and 80’s to about 7% today. The Government supports the coffee industry through ICAFE, helping the thousands of small farmers, 90% of whom manage less than 5 hectares (about 12 acres) of coffee.

With the country’s unparalleled record of eco-sustainability, it is planned that organic coffee areas will expand, furthering Costa Rica’s reputation for sweet, mild coffee beans.
