We like our espresso to be full, smooth, and a little bit sweet. This precludes espresso roasts that have been burnt to such a degree that carbonization is the only real flavor that comes through.
Our espresso is a medium roast single origin coffee from Brazil. It has notes of honey and jasmine, but what stands out immediately is a balance of good acids with a sweetness that makes a shot delicious all on its own.
This leads us a brief aside on over-roasted espresso. Many coffee fans instinctively reach for a darker roast, hoping to find rich, full flavors. There are some decent espresso blends out there that are dark roasted, but in most cases the roast level far overpowers any characteristics of the bean. Many fine cafes and restaurants serve dark-roasted espresso, which carries a prominent bitter carbony flavor. The cachet of drinking espresso straight will cause many to simply endure the bad flavor, and eventually it becomes sort of an acquired taste.
But espresso shots need not be so unpleasant. Take our medium roasted espresso beans, grind them right before brewing, and pull a shot. Drink it immediately, from one of our porcelain cups from Italy, before the crema disappears. We promise you won't want a return to the days of burnt espresso.
