La Marzocco GS/3
The La Marzocco GS/3 dramatically resets the gold standard for performance among all espresso machines. Its performance meets and surpasses the finest high volume machines on the market today. In surprisingly small footprint, with water reservoir or plumb-in options, the GS3 suits high-end home use and has sufficient steam power and performance for many commercial applications including restaurants, catering, and professional offices.
The automatic version of the GS/3 uses programmable buttons to control the flow and water and pressure through the grouphead via an internal valve. Pre-infusion allows you to bring out different flavor components which affect the balance and body of the shot, and produce a rounder, softer espresso that highlights brightness, sweetness and delicate notes.
Features at a glance
Double Boiler
PID Temperature Control
Automatic Brew Group
Double Boiler:
Double boiler espresso machines have one boiler each for steam and espresso. You can steam and pull shots simultaneously. Additionally, the steam boiler has a dedicated power switch, which gives the user the option to provide power only to the group head boiler if milk steaming won’t be necessary. Double boilers typically control the temperature digitally for the most consistent temperature. If you want the best, consider a double boiler.
Visit our Espresso Machine Buyers Guide for more information on boiler types.
PID Temperature Control:
A PID (Proportional Integral Derivative) controller closely monitors and electronically regulates the water temperature at the brew group. A PID sends short bursts of power to your boiler, keeping the temperature within a very narrow range. With a machine like the Izzo Duetto, you can control the temperature to within 1 degree of accuracy. Heat exchangers cannot be used with a PID, and instead rely on a mechanical pressurestat to regulate temperature. Single boilers can have PID control, and are an upgrade option on machines like the Quick Mill Alexia.
PIDs are not required for a good espresso shot, but they do allow you to precisely dial in your brew temperature. This is especially important for single origin espressos and straight shot enthusiasts.
Automatic Brew Group:
With the automatic brew group, the user has indirect control over the profiling of each shot extraction. Pre-infusion and shot volumes must be programmed.
NSF Certified:
No other independent testing programs require companies to comply with the strict standards imposed by NSF and its product certification programs. From extensive product testing and material analyses to unannounced plant inspections, NSF is the only third-party testing organization to undertake a complete evaluation of every aspect of a product's development before it can earn a certification.
A Product that is certified or listed means that NSF:
- (1)
- Reviewed the Product, most often through a sampling of the Product and its components, materials, and compounds.
- (2)
- Determined at the time of the review that the Product complies with the relevant NSF consensus standard and/or protocol ("Standard"); and
- (3)
- Conducted or will conduct periodic audits to review whether the Product continues to comply with the Standard.
ETL Listed:
A product bearing the ETL Listed Mark is determined to have met the requirements of prescribed product safety standards. Moreover, the mark indicates that the manufacturer's production site conforms to a range of compliance measures and is subject to periodic follow-up inspections to verify continued conformance.
PID Temperature Control
- A closed loop temperature controler gives the user remakable control over espresso extraction and steam.
Double Boiler
- When paired with a PID, isolated boilers provide superior temperature precision and predictability.
Automatic Brew Group
- Volumetric espresso extraction that allows programmable control over shot profiling.

Custom Wood Panels
Make the GS/3 your own with our custom wood panels. We worked with a Portland craftsman to produce custom, hand-made wood side panels for the GS/3. The contour and lines of the panels precisely follow the stock side panels. We've chosen a beautiful domestic wood, Oregon black walnut, and two exotic woods, Bubinga and Wenge as standard options for the wood panels, but we can work with you to use material of your choice. Custom engraving is also available.
The wood panels are made from 2" to 3" thick panels of wood that are carefully selected for the most attractive grain. The wood is finished with multiple coats of Tung oil, and you may specify a gloss or matte finish. To protect the wood panels, the inside is lined with fiberglass insulation.
PROS:
- Dual boiler:
- Dedicated boilers for steam and espresso mean that recovery time is rapid and temperature stability is excellent.
- Saturated Brew Group:
- With a direct connection to the brew boiler, saturated groups can provide exceptional thermal stability.
- Temperature control:
- The PID temperature controler gives the user remakable control and precision over espresso extraction.
CONS:
- Volumetric Extraction:
- Unlike the paddle version, expresso extraction on the automatic is volumetric and must be programmed.
- Pre-infusion:
- To fully utilize this functionality, the machine must be plumbed.
- Digital Programming:
- Programming is not always intuitive. If you have a question, give us a call. We are more than happy to help.
