Details on Preorder Deposit & Shipping:

The Ratio machine is the result of three years of intensive research, engineering, testing, and prototyping.

The first batch will be for 500 machines, and you are placing a preorder to reserve one of these units. Your card will be charged to reserve the machine for you, but you may cancel your preorder at any time for a full refund.

We estimate that pre-ordered units will begin shipping in January 2015. The factors that will influence the final ship date include:

Pending UL approval: We are designing the Ratio machine to be in full compliance with UL standards, but there is a chance we'll have to make adjustments to comply with UL testing before shipping units.

Production timelines: We have finalized a production schedule in cooperation with our carefully selected vendors for aluminum, glass, and walnut wood. However, we are relying on their best estimates of time. Our shipping update includes a large margin of error, but there could be additional delays incurred during production.

Stringent quality control: We will never compromise quality in favor of speed. Every part in the coffee maker is inspected before installation, and the final machine is tested before it is packaged and shipped. Our entire company is devoted to an extraordinary product that makes amazing coffee every time. If this means we must delay shipping in order to ensure complete quality, we will do so and inform you along the way.

Returns: You may try out the Ratio for 30 days from date of receipt. If you don't love it, we'll send you a prepaid return label and credit you in full, subject to our returns policy.

We will keep you posted on progress, and you can reach us at sales@clivecoffee.com or 800.520.2890 if you have any questions.

Engineered for Extraordinary Coffee

Ratio is smarter than your average coffee maker. Beneath the exterior is precise brewing science, automated. Ratio is equipped with a powerful heating element. Where lesser machines struggle to maintain the optimum temperature - brewing either too hot or too cold - Ratio consistently delivers water at the ideal temperature of ~200°.

Inspired by the precision of manual brewing with pourover kettles, Ratio uses a unique showerhead design to uniformly saturate the coffee grounds. This means a more complex cup of coffee for you – without extra complexity in your routine.

Hot water poured over fresh roasted coffee causes a bubbly interaction called a “bloom.” The control board of Ratio applies a bloom cycle that allows the bloom to settle down before delivering the rest of the hot water. The result? More evenly extracted grounds and a more amazing cup of coffee.

Less Thinking and Better Drinking

Sometimes you just want a great cup of coffee without having to think about time, temperature, and other variables. We agree, which is why Ratio has just one button and no complicated programming. The subtle white lights on the front of the machine will tell you what's happening with the brew cycle, but you probably have better things to do like catch up on your morning read. Ratio won't mind at all.

Whether a 40 ounce carafe for the party, or a 16 ounce cup for the road, both should be equally easy and delicious. That’s why we designed Ratio to automatically determine the amount of water you've added to the tank and adjust the brewing time accordingly.

You shouldn’t have to be a trained barista to make great coffee, and you shouldn’t have to be an engineer to clean your coffee maker. After brewing, simply rinse out the sturdy glass carafe with hot water, discard or compost the used paper filter, and you’re done. For deeper cleaning every other week or so, Ratio cleaning detergent will keep the water tank and carafe sparkling clean.

Good morning: Your coffee machine is ready

There are coffee machines that make great coffee and there are coffee machines that look great. Ratio is the first coffee machine that is truly both, combining form and function.

The materials chosen for the Ratio machine juxtapose the precision of high tech with the irregularity of natural finishes. Die cast nickel-plated aluminum contrasts with Oregon black walnut and borosilicate glass.

Designed in Portland, Oregon, every Ratio machine is meticulously assembled by hand. While common appliances often have a built-in obsolescence and a life span of maybe 2-3 years, Ratio is designed to last.

Able Kone Included

The Ratio Eight carafe is designed to use either Chemex paper filters or the Able KONE, a high quality stainless steel filter made in the US. Able Brewing develops high quality brewing equipment and has partnered with us to bring to market a KONE that is perfectly suited for brewing larger volumes of up to 40 ounces at a time. It is made of American-sourced stainless steel that is photo etched to create a precision filtering screen. If you like flavorful coffee without too much sediment, you’ll love the Able KONE for Ratio.

My maternal grandfather was a student of architecture and collector of iconic furniture. He gave me his collection of drafting tools, 35mm cameras, and a few pieces of his art, one of which hangs in the Ratio office. From him I learned to appreciate good design and beautiful tools.

My paternal grandfather was a German entrepreneur in the performance auto parts business. He loved quality & good engineering, passing on to my dad and then me the "curse of always insisting on the best." They both said that it's better to pay more for quality up front than to be constantly replacing inferior goods.

I took their advice to heart when I started selling coffee & espresso equipment in 2008 with Clive Coffee, offering only brands that reflected good design and quality that lasts.

Ratio is the result of pondering coffee makers for several years. After listening to many customers complain about flimsy plastic parts, complicated programming steps, and overall inelegance, I decided to draw together a team of talented designers, engineers, and creatives to build a new company that is devoted entirely to coffee machines of unmatched beauty and quality. Drop me a note – I’d love to hear your thoughts!
