TECHNIVORM SURPASSES THE REST
Of all the coffee makers on the market, we chose to carry exclusively the Technivorm Moccamaster. As one of only two coffeemakers certified by the Specialty Coffee Association (SCAA), this machine is head and shoulders above the rest. Instead of thin plastic parts and unnecessary electronic gadgetry, the Technivorm KBGT-741 is built solidly and has only an on/off switch.
We've tested the other machines out there, and they generally make bitter, flat coffee. The Technivorm KBGT-741 will brew your coffee the way it should be brewed, producing a clean, nuanced, and flavorful cup of coffee.

Is it worth the money?
Is it worth the money? | When we first started selling coffee equipment, we had no plans to carry coffee makers. Too many of them gurgle forth disgusting coffee, are made in China, and proudly feature only one reliable function, which is their time of death, precisely two years after purchase. We've been french press and espresso people for so long that we couldn't imagine a coffee maker making a delicious brew. When we heard of the Technivorm, we knew we had to give it a try. It simply did not disappoint, and now we use it every day at the office. In fact, it brews up four to five carafes a day for us, and doesn't show any signs of wear. It weighs about eight pounds, and the European craftsmanship is evident in the quality components. The Technivorm is an investment in years of coffee drinking pleasure.
Will the carafe keep it hot? | We've found that the Technivorm keeps coffee hot in its carafe for about an hour and a half. If you'd like to keep your coffee hot for longer than that, we recommend some of the other vacuum carafes, such as the striking jugs from Stelton.
Does it really make coffee taste better? | Many coffee brewers on the market have aluminum heating elements, which are prone to metal fatigue and don’t get the brew water to the necessary 200 temperature. If your brew water isn’t hot enough or the brew cycle is too long, you end up with sour, bitter coffee. The Technivorm’s copper heating element heats the water quickly and allows for an optimal brew time of about 7 minutes for a full pot. This results in a sweet and balanced cup of coffee.

Why we love the Swiss Gold Filter
- Paper filters are not only wasteful, but they also alter the flavor of your coffee. Instead of allowing the lipids and oils in the coffee to filter through, the paper filters absorb them, leaving you with a less flavorful and thinner cup. Since paper isn’t an inert material, you end up extracting the flavor of the paper, too.
- Unlike less expensive “gold tone” filters, which are usually golden-colored stainless steel, the Swiss Gold coffee filter is made of real 23-carat gold foil. Stainless steel and other metals can give coffee a metallic flavor, but gold doesn’t.
- The Swiss Gold filter is engineered to hold back large particles, while allowing the flavorful elements of the coffee to come through. You’ll end up with a richer, more full-bodied cup of coffee without any sludge at the bottom.
Why Use a Burr Grinder
- Next to freshly roasted beans and clean water, burr grinders are the most important component for making a great cup of coffee.
- Inexpensive blade grinders are popular, but really just chop coffee beans instead of grinding them, leaving you with grounds that vary in size from huge chunks to a fine powder. This difference in particle size gives you inconsistent extraction, blending sharp, bitter over-extracted flavors with dull, sour under-extracted flavors. Not a very good cup, eh?
- Burr grinders, on the other hand, grind beans between a rotating burr and a stationary surface. This gives you grounds that are uniform in size and shape, from which the sweet, smooth flavors of the bean can be extracted reliably.
- Burr grinders are also easy to adjust, so you can find the perfect grind setting to set your brewing method. With a blade grinder, you have to shake while grinding and counting seconds to get the right type of grind. All that motion heats up the coffee while grinding, leading to scorched flavors in the cup. Burr grinders grind quickly without heating up the beans.
- Once you try your freshly roasted, freshly burr-ground coffee, you will definitely taste an improvement, regardless of how you brew your coffee.

AWARD WINNING COFFEE
The striking minimalist design of the Technivorm is married to an impressive ability to make great coffee. The Moccamaster earned the coveted SCAA certification because of its ability to brew at a consistent temperature between 195 and 205 degrees Fahrenheit for the full 6 minutes of the short brew cycle. The secret is the heating element, which is made of copper instead of aluminum, and the high wattage of the machine (1475 watts instead of the typical 900), both working together to bring the water to the right temperature quickly.
A CUT ABOVE
By comparison, most home machines only reach 185 degrees while brewing, and take around 10 minutes to finish the cycle. The longer the hot water saturates the beans, more bitter compounds are pulled out. This is why most home machines make flat and bitter coffee. The Technivorm not only brews coffee at the proper temperature, it also uses a 9-outlet spray head and cone-shaped filter (as opposed to a flat bottom) to ensure even extraction of the grounds. The carafe will maintain an optimal serving temperature between 155 and 175 degrees F.
Since the 1960s this Netherlandic company has been hand-making machines, providing customers with machines in line with their central aims of making “reliable equipment simple to operate providing the maximum satisfaction to its users through being completely dependable.”
KBT-741 AND CDT MODELS COMPARED
The KBT-741 offers the same features as the CDT, except with aesthetic differences. The KBT-741 has a tall, rectangular water tank and housing, while the CDT is cylindrical. The use the same carafe, which is solid stainless steel, with double-wall construction and an airtight lid to retain heat. It will comfortably hold 8 cups of coffee (6 ounce cups). The housing of both machines is made of thick machined aluminum with a polished finish.

General Technivorm Questions
The difference is purely aesthetics, and four tenths of an inch in height. The KBT-741 has a square water tank and housing and is four tenths of an inch taller than the CDT. The CDT has a cylindrical water tank and housing. Both share the same quality components like the copper heating element, have the same carafe, and hold the same amount of water.

If you like rich, flavorful coffee and don't mind a bit of sediment, like in french pressed coffee, we highly recommend the gold filter. Ours is imported from Switzerland and features a very fine mesh. Paper filters trap more of the natural coffee oils and don't allow as much coffee to get through along with the water, so it will result in a highly filtered cup of coffee. Some people prefer this. If you like "rich" coffee, give the gold filter a try. Any size 4, cone shaped gold filter will fit in the Technivorm.
We've found that the Technivorm keeps coffee hot in its carafe for about an hour and a half. If you'd like to keep your coffee hot for longer than that, we recommend some of the other vacuum carafes, such as the striking jugs from Stelton.
The free coffee we include with your Technivorm will usually depend on which coffee we are roasting the day of your shipment. All of the coffee that we offer is roasted in small batches, so not every coffee is available every day, depending on the roast schedule. You may request a particular coffee or a particular style (i.e. "dark roast" or "medium roast" or "chocolaty") and we'll do our best of send coffees that fit that description. Please note that we do not offer ground coffee or decaf.
Yes. There are some misconceptions floating around on forum threads and in reviews on various sites. The Technivorm has a DOUBLE safety feature. Two conditions must be met for the heating element to be turned on - the first is the carafe must be pushed in all the way so that the white button is depressed all the way. The second is a floater that is built into the water tank. This is a small piece of plastic that rests under the metal cover on the bottom of the water tank. If this floater isn't floating, it indicates to the machine that there is no water in the tank and the boiler remains off. If either of these two conditions are not met, the power in the machine is only going to the light on the power switch. It's safe to leave the machine on, as the heating element will be completely turned off. We do recommend turning it off when you remember, but it won't harm the machine to leave it on.
The stainless steel Technivorm carafe can get coffee stains on the inside which are difficult to clean. We have found that using a little electric dishwasher soap (like Cascade), or one of the Cascade “action pacs”, cleans up the inside nicely. Simply fill the carafe full of hot water, add the soap, and let it soak for 30 minutes. All the stains should be removed without any effort. The filter basket and metal water warm are dishwasher safe (top rack).
We occasionally sell open-box Technivorms that are cleaned and inspected to our satisfaction. We never sell these machines as new. All of our other machines are 100% new, in the manufacturer's box. You may see a very small amount of water in the Technivorm when you receive it. This is from the bench testing that Technivorm conducts on every single coffee maker that leaves their factory. This is completely normal, and is one of the reasons why we recommend that you run two cycles of water through your machine before brewing for the first time.
Yes! Technivorm has indeed developed a brew-thru lid that fits on the current KBT-741 and CDT carafes.Click here for more info. Heat retention is maximized by dropping the coffee at the bottom of the carafe. It also mixes the coffee as its brewing. You can brew and pour through this lid. It is dishwasher safe (top rack). Please note that this lid will increase the temperature of the brewed coffee at the end of the brew cycle, but the coffee will cool faster than with the Travel lid as it is not a complete seal. For the hottest coffee possible, use the Brew Thru lid first, then seal the carafe with the Travel lid. The Brew Thru lid now comes standard with the CDT and KBT-741 models. Please note that the brew-thru lid does NOT fit on the KBTS carafes.
The grind level depends on a variety of factors - type of coffee, how darkly it's roasted (and how much oil there is on the outside of the bean,) and the atmospheric moisture. That being said, the optimal grind is usually the coarseness of cornmeal. If your grinder has 10 settings, 1 for espresso and 10 for percolator, start with 6, then adjust from there. If water cannot find its way through the grinds quick enough, and/or your filter basket is overflowing, then step up the coarseness. Too fine and the coffee will over-extract (tasting bitter) - too coarse, and it will under-extract (tasting weak).
The water tank is made of high density plastic (like airplane windows), and holds cold water until the brew cycle is started, then the water is dropped into the heating element. The water is heated in the copper heating element, then is forced up a glass tube, over the metal spray arm, then down into the plastic filter basket. This basket is made of ABS plastic (like plastic plumbing pipes) and does not contain the BPA that is associated with health hazards.
The only 2 parts that are made out of Polycarbonate material that would have BPA’s in them are the water reservoir lid and the filter basket lid. All of the materials that come in contact with the water and coffee are BPA free.
Of course. Just use half the amount of water and coffee grounds and set the brew basket to the partial flow setting to slow down the extraction process.
